Advanced Placement Literature and Composition (AP English)

Students enrolled in AP Literature and Composition for SY 2019-2020 are expected to read the classic satirical novella Candide by Voltaire, in addition to your senior grade level book. A PDF of the novella can be found here: Candide Modern Translation. This novella will be essential in understanding and participating in Unit 1 of AP Lit and Comp and there will be in-class assignments &/or assessments related to it. Therefore, in addition to reading Candide (which is relatively short, but complex) I expect you to also keep reading notes to assist you in the fall with the related assignments. In order to do this, you will create a Google Doc titled “AP Lit Journal. your last name (e.g. AP Lit Journal.Warfel). You will use this journal all year long in class, but for now it will serve as a place to keep reading notes on Candide. There is no required format or length for your reading notes, because part of the purpose of having you keep them is so I can assess your note-taking style and then help you improve this essential college skill, if needed. However, at minimum your notes should contain bullet points of major plot points as well as a list of characters and any vocabulary words that are new to you (defined). I will expect you to share your journal with me on or before the first day of class, and your reading notes will constitute your first grade for the course. If you have questions at any point during the summer, please email me: rwarfel@gocfs.net.
